Dr. Martino Rossi Monti / CV

Martino Rossi Monti was born in Florence in 1978. In 2002 he graduated in philosophy (aesthetics) from the University of Florence, where he also earned his PhD in 2007. In 2006-2007 he was visiting student at the University of Chicago, Divinity School. In 2008-2009 and 2011-212 he held post-doctoral fellowships in philosophy at the University of Florence. In 2011 he was awarded an Endeavour Research Fellowship from the Australian Government and conducted research at the University of Melbourne, Australia. In 2014 he taught 300 level courses to American students on “Mysticism and Magic in Medieval & Renaissance Italy” (Richmond Florence Study Center, Florence, Italy; thirty-six hour course) and on “The Birth of Modern Science in Europe” (The Umbra Institute, Perugia, Italy; thirty-hour course).
Among his research interests: Plotinus and the Platonic tradition; the theme of grace and beauty of soul between Late Antiquity and the Renaissance; the physiognomical tradition; the understanding and representation of evil, cruelty and violence both in current debates and in the history of the West (with particular attention to the problem of watching or witnessing the suffering of others, whether in reality or in fiction).
